I am an Emotional Creature: The secret life of girls, is Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues for a whole new generation of young women. In 2013 a cast of 8 talented young Perth actors inhabited characters from Eve Ensler's 2011 book and performed to sold out audiences as part of 1 Billion Rising. In 2014 they performed 5 sold out shows at Perth's Fringe World.
The project, conceived and directed by Jule Japhet, was an exploration of the principles of ARTAVISM to engage and embolden young women to take up the challenge of Eve Ensler's text and amplify its voices within their community.
The characters performed included a girl who is sex trafficked and dares to think about rescue; a child labourer who "headsends" secret thoughts to western girls in the heads of the dolls she's assembling in a factory; a teen whose short skirt is none of our business.
The play was a remarkable journey for the young actors and for the audiences willing to travel with them and share its special triumph in the face of it's confronting messages.
Comments from the Fringe World Audience:
"Extraordinary. An important experience for my kids to have at this time in their lives."
"If only I had seen this when I was a girl."
"Can my daughter join the cast?"
"Please - show this in schools!"
